Students from several universities enjoyed “lunch on GBA” during the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) annual concrete canoe races in Lawrence, KS and Ames, IA in 2007. GBA sent employees to host an extensive barbequed lunch for all students, family, and friends who attended.
Canoes are judged on several categories:
Final Product - This category ensures that the canoe meets all the rules and regulations that are set forth and also judges the canoe on its aesthetic appeal.
Swamp Test - A large rectangular box is created and filled with water and each canoe is submerged in the tank and then allowed to rise to the surface.
Technical Paper - This represents a compilation of all the data concerning the canoe.
Presentation - The judges are all given the technical papers from each team and then listen to presentations by each team.
Races - There are five races: Men's/Women's Endurance, Men's/Women's Sprint, and coed four-man sprint.
