Waldo Margheim, P.E. – Water Environment Group
At just 37, Waldo is already a seasoned wastewater engineer whose enthusiasm for what he does is infectious. With his innovative ideas, eye for detail, and easy, down-to-earth manner, he’s making a name in the industry and among the clients he serves.
What makes GBA special to you?
It’s special to me because we’re like a family. My teammates in the Water Environment Group are great to work with and we’re passionate about the work we do. I was born and raised in Oakley, Kansas, a small town in the northwest part of the state. I think GBA mirrors the values of small town America.
Most recent achievement?
In my career, I’m proud of the work we do for all of our clients. We recently successfully finished a five-mile interceptor project for a small community in Missouri; one of their largest public works projects ever.
In my personal life, I was recently named “Most Awesome Dad Ever” by my son (after catching a wasp for his insect collection).
Your passion?
I love being an engineer and I’m fortunate to have found the career that I’m best suited for. I initially wanted to be an architect, but Mr. Baalman, my high school algebra teacher, in all his wisdom encouraged me to pursue engineering. The rest is history. I received a B.S. in civil engineering at Kansas State University and an M.S. in environmental engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
In what other ways are you involved?
I’m actively involved with the Missouri and Kansas Water Environment Associations’ Government Affairs committees. Understanding water-related regulations and legislation is critical to providing the best services we can to our clients.
Also, Gary Beck (my supervisor) and I recently assisted with revisions to the Water Environment Federation Manual of Practice 17, “Prevention and Control of Sewer System Overflows (Third Edition),” now available at the WEF Bookstore. We are available for autographs.
And in your spare time?
People may be surprised, but I love music, especially hard rock and heavy metal. I’m an official card-carrying member of the KISS Army! My wife and I have attended KISS concerts in Kansas City, Nashville, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Council Bluffs. But most of my spare time is spent with my two kids, now nine and seven years old, and their seemingly endless activities! Of course, I also find time to cheer for the Wildcats and Volunteers.
