Sar-Ko-Par Park Trails Spillway

Lenexa, Kansas

The spillway was experiencing continued flows due to upstream development causing erosion and scouring, thus jeopardizing the future integrity of the dam. The City of Lenexa worked with GBA to develop designs that would not only minimize the ongoing erosion and scouring but also incorporate aesthetics that were consistent with the park’s existing features. In order to comply with the city’s “Rain to Recreation” program and illustrate the benefits of the program at Sar-Ko-Par Park, GBA was asked to incorporate both hard and soft engineering solutions. Native plants along with concrete blocks, coir fibre logs, and turf reinforced mattress were used in the construction.

GBA provided the surveying, landscaping, biological, structural, and water resources design for the rehabilitation of the park’s emergency spillway. The City of Lenexa provided staff and equipment to construct the improvements.
