George E. Wolf Parking and Retail Structure

Kansas City, Missouri

This project consists of a 10-story, 1,350-car parking structure with 17,000 sf of retail area placed at street level. The project was designed as a backdrop to the surrounding area across from the Kansas City, Missouri city hall, and closes off the public area in front of city hall to the south. A sloped site complicated the layout and design of the structure in terms of auto entrances at different levels and layout of the retail space below.

To address the City’s security concerns, the exterior skin of the parking levels were enclosed with perforated aluminum panels. This material increases the level of visual security, while providing a sense of openness for patrons. The stair and elevator towers were placed at the northeast and southeast corners and were enclosed with tinted glass. During the evening hours, the tinted panels allow high visibility of the illuminated interior art, enhancing the beauty of the neighborhood, and creating a well-lit, safe landmark for the civic downtown district.
