Johnson County Community College
Overland Park, Kansas
GBA designed first-phase landscape and lighting improvements for the 27,000-sf Commons Plaza area at Johnson County Community College, including grading and a new storm drainage system to eliminate the ponding of water which had occurred in the existing Plaza area.
Different colors and patterns of brick pavers were used to define and separate pedestrian walks and sitting areas. Lighting was also used to define pedestrian circulation routes and congregation spaces. Shrubs and flowers were extensively planted to add color and charm to this prominent area of the campus. Special attention was given to preserving the existing mature sycamore trees.
The college, which is located on a 235-acre site in Overland Park, Kansas, is the fourth largest educational institution in the state.
