A timely schedule enabled the City of Lenexa, Kansas, to reopen the Marshall Drive Bridge in just over five months after a portion of the concrete deck fell onto the roadway below. The incident, which forced the closure of the bridge, occurred just a week before construction of a new bridge was scheduled to begin. Built in 1966, the aging structure was badly deteriorated and had already been earmarked for rehabilitation or replacement by GBA's Bridge Inspection Group, which had monitored its condition over the years.
GBA provided engineering design services for the new 260-ft-long, 4-span, steel beam bridge, including writing an incentive/disincentive plan to ensure that construction was completed within 160 consecutive calendar days. The firm coordinated with the BNSF Railroad and utility companies throughout construction. Because of the high volume of train traffic at the location, construction scheduling and communication were vital to the success of the project. GBA also provided traffic control plans, surveying, and LPA inspection services.
