Continued growth in southern Johnson County, Kansas, prompted the City of Overland Park to improve a 1-mile segment of Quivira Road between 135th and 143rd streets. The new 4-lane divided arterial is located in a fast-growing part of the city that is experiencing significant increases in traffic. It replaces a 2-lane rural roadway.
The City of Overland Park selected GBA to provide engineering design services for the improvements, including the design of two new 135-foot-long bridges spanning Tomahawk Creek, storm drainage, and street lighting. GBA also provided signalization design at the 135th Street intersection and signal layout at 137th, 141st, and 143rd streets. To plan for future growth, design was completed for the reconstruction and widening of 143rd Street east and west of Quivira and for the extension of Quivira south of 143rd Street.
Amenities include sidewalks on both sides of the roadway along the length of the project, including the bridges, and a 24-foot landscaped median. The project was designed using metric units to conform with the requirements set forth by KDOT for federal funds. It was administered by the City of Overland Park.
