Kansas City International Airport

Kansas City, Missouri

Keeping the airport facilities running efficiently and cost effectively is the charge of the Aviation Department of Kansas City, Missouri, which oversees all aspects of facilities operation from security and parking to maintaining the terminal buildings. To ensure that KCI remains one of the premier airports in the U.S., the Aviation Department upgraded the HVAC systems that serve the three terminals and the administration building, a total of more than one million square feet. The improvements were designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs for the systems, while ensuring a comfortable environment for travelers.

The first phase of the work, which was completed at a construction cost of $3 million, involved replacement of the chilled water distribution center. A new centralized temperature control system for the heating, ventilation, and air condition systems was designed. Construction of the complex project was completed on a compressed schedule that required the cooperation of all involved. Existing equipment had to be removed and new equipment installed and on-line in approximately two months.

GBA provided comprehensive mechanical and electrical design services on the project, including evaluation of existing systems, recommendations for needed improvements, and the design of rehabilitation and repair.
