Veterans Administration Medical Center

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

GBA provided complete advanced planning studies and subsequent design services for a 110,000 sf addition to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oklahoma City. The additional medical space was created above the existing clinic/laboratory building wing and was designed to contain an 8-unit surgical suite; SICU, MICU, and CICU wards; and a new SPD department. As a part of this project, it was necessary to expand the central chilled water plant at the medical center.

The critical nature of the operating suite addition demanded complete redundancy in both mechanical and electrical systems. A detailed value engineering study was undertaken using life cycle cost analysis to determine the most cost-effective method for adding the additional chilled water capacity. Two 120-ton reciprocating and one 500-ton centrifugal chillers were added along with condensing units, cooling tower, chilled water and condenser water pumps, and piping modifications. The critical nature of the operating suite addition demanded complete redundancy in both mechanical and electrical systems. Emergency electrical power systems were extended and additional emergency generator units were added to the hospital emergency power system.

GBA provided comprehensive mechanical and electrical design services on the project, including evaluation of existing systems, recommendations for needed improvements, and the design of rehabilitation and repair.
