US-40 / K-10 Diverging Diamond Interchange
Project Overview
As Lawrence, Kansas continues to grow, its transportation infrastructure must keep pace. The US-40/K-10 interchange, a key traffic hub, required major upgrades to improve efficiency and safety. GBA led the design of Lawrence’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), replacing the traditional layout with a modern solution that enhances traffic flow and supports future development.
Innovative Design and Key Solutions
To address complex transportation challenges, GBA relocated East 900 Road to meet KDOT’s access management requirements and upgrade US-40 to a divided arterial. For pedestrians and cyclists, the project extended a reinforced concrete box under US-40/6th Street, connecting the Lawrence Loop trail to the city’s sidewalk network.

Bridge Rehabilitation and DDI Conversion
Rather than a full bridge reconstruction, GBA rehabilitated the existing structure and converted ramp terminals to a DDI configuration, reducing congestion and improving safety.
Timeline and Completion
After initial studies in 2012, the project resumed in 2020 once funding was secured. GBA delivered final plans in 2023, and construction was completed in fall 2024, providing a safer, more efficient interchange for the region.
