George Butler began his career with a landscape architectural firm, Hare & Hare, in 1961. In 1969, during a reorganization of the firm, George separated the engineering group from the rest of the company. As a result, George E. Butler & Associates, Inc. consulting engineers opened its doors on June 23, 1969.
The firm’s first office was located in downtown Kansas City, Missouri housing 10 employees who specialized in civil engineering and land planning. Armed with a substantial backlog of work from his former association with Hare & Hare, the new firm thrived.
As George Butler continued to expand his new firm by diversifying services, he looked to his longtime friend George Saller. Saller joined the firm in 1970 to develop the firm’s mechanical and electrical capabilities and launched what would be a 25-year partnership between Butler and Saller at GBA.
Throughout the 1980s, the firm experienced a substantial period of growth. Staff had doubled in size, and billings quadrupled. This exponential growth helped solidify GBA as the fourth-largest firm in Kansas City in 1985 and again in 1986. The firm continued to expand, providing many of the services GBA still offers today.
