KDOT Sidewalk Project for The American Disabilities Act (ADA)
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, one being transportation. With any GBA project, the team is responsible to make sure every project follows ADA compliant design.
What is the Americans with Disabilities Act?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that was enacted in 1990 to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, transportation, and public accommodations.
Under the ADA, individuals with disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations in the workplace and in public spaces to ensure equal access to goods and services.
The law prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and aims to create a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to participate fully.
Project Scope
The GBA Transportation Engineering team was hired by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to provide design services for ADA improvements throughout the state of Kansas as part of their federally funded preservation work. The team oversaw the review of 16 cities in Kansas with pedestrian facilities crossing state routes that were planned to be resurfaced.
The team visited each site to review ADA compliance. If the crossing did not meet the standards and was deemed non-compliant, the team gathered information to then provide an ADA-compliant design for the facility.
A few locations had constraints such as stairs or walls. GBA partnered with surveyors to obtain more detailed information to assist with developing design recommendations.
After the site visits were complete, GBA was able to provide two submittals to KDOT for ADA designs, traffic control layouts and sidewalk detours. A portion of these projects utilized GBA Project Live, incorporating GBA’s affiliate, Alynix. Drone imagery was utilized through GIS to efficiently produce plans.
