Getting Out of the Classroom and Into a Career: GBA’s Internship Program

At GBA, our internship program is focused on getting students out of the classroom and into their career. GBA’s Human Resources department concentrates on recruiting the best and brightest students to participate in our summer internship program.

“Our goal is to attract talented students on college campuses and help them explore their career options at GBA,” said Danielle Stetzenbach, GBA University Relations and Campus Recruiter. “We work together with group management to create a well-rounded internship experience that will make students want to continue their career with GBA after graduation.”

To stand out from other internship programs, GBA focuses on providing the best possible experience for interns. While education is the foundation for these young professionals, the ability to take part in real-world experiences while still in school is irreplaceable.

Throughout the summer at GBA, no day ever looks exactly the same. An intern might find themselves designing on a project, in a client meeting, at a networking event or heading out to the field all in the same week. Additionally, interns are assigned work for real projects, which allows them to put what they’ve learned in school to the test. These experiences are important to students and make a difference in getting the brightest talent interested in GBA.

“I’m most excited to see how everything I learned in school will relate to real-world projects,” said Phillip Swoboda, University of Missouri student and engineering intern. “The fact that I will have responsibilities instead of busywork attracted me to this internship.”

In order to provide interns with meaningful and purposeful work throughout their time at GBA, our Human Resources team works closely with hiring managers and supervisors to create a plan of work. This ensures that each intern will have set goals and objectives for them to reach over the course of the program. By collaborating across departments before our interns arrive, GBA provides students with an educational and interesting experience.

During their summer, interns not only get to learn more about their profession, but also what it means to be a member of the GBA team. They get to participate in many of GBA’s firmwide events, including summer intramurals and volunteer opportunities. GBA’s most recent group of interns even got to join in for our 50th-anniversary celebration. Our Human Resources department also puts on professional development events specifically for interns.

“By offering these experiences, interns know at the end of their internship what it will be like to work at GBA. Because of this, we have a great success rate in retaining them as new graduates,” said Stetzenbach.

A successful internship program plays a major role in GBA’s ongoing strategic growth goals. After experiencing GBA’s culture for a summer, most interns turn into full-time employees and help our team continue to grow. As the primary pipeline to new graduate hires, the program can be viewed as a direct reflection of GBA’s overall growth. This past summer, GBA hosted its largest intern class, 16 total interns, with four of them located in our regional offices.

“At GBA, we are always looking to bring on creative, innovative thinkers to help us reach our goal of providing remarkable solutions to our clients,” said Stetzenbach. “Our internship program gets to showcase the many benefits of being a GBA employee to students who are excited to step into their careers.”
