Garden City Survey & LiDAR Services
When the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) set out to improve safety along an 11-mile stretch of highway in Finney County, accuracy was the first priority. To design proposed passing lanes that will reduce head-on collisions and create a safer commute, KDOT needed a precise picture of the existing roadway. That’s where GBA stepped in.
A Clear View of the Road Ahead
The GBA team provided a full topographic and boundary survey using both Mobile and Aerial LiDAR technology alongside traditional surveying methods. One of the biggest surprises came when three section corners were discovered to be misplaced by 30 to 60 feet. Correcting these errors required a careful blend of planning, General Land Office (GLO) records and existing survey data. Thanks to the experience of our survey team, the corners were successfully reestablished, ensuring a reliable foundation for design.
Challenges in Motion
Surveying an active highway isn’t without obstacles. With high volumes of fast-moving traffic and weather that changes quickly across western Kansas, our crews had to stay adaptable and organized. Specialized equipment helped the team keep work moving efficiently in demanding conditions.
Building Safer Roads
At its core, this project is about safety. The data our team provided supports the design of new passing lanes that will give drivers more opportunities to pass safely, lowering the risk of head-on collisions and making travel through Garden City safer for the entire community.
