Street Interchange Study
Project Overview
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), in coordination with the City of Gardner, Johnson County, and New Century Airport (IXD) is evaluating potential improvements at the I-35 and U.S. 56/175th Street interchange in Gardner, Kansas. This interchange has become a critical focus due to safety concerns, traffic flow challenges and anticipated growth in the surrounding area.
The study, which began in early 2025 and will conclude in December 2025, is designed to identify both interim and long-term solutions to address current and future transportation demands. Key objectives include improving access, enhancing safety and creating a design that can adapt to regional development.
KDOT and the GBA-led design team have advanced three potential alternatives for consideration:
- Diverging Diamond Interchange with access to adjacent development.
- Upgraded Diamond Interchange with a peanut-shaped roundabout to accommodate all traffic movements.
Public and stakeholder involvement has been central to the process. GBA, serving as prime consultant, is responsible for conceptual roadway design, traffic engineering leadership and support for public engagement activities. The team will present a preferred alignment alternative during the second public open house in Fall 2025, followed by a final report and recommendation to KDOT by year-end.
This study is setting the groundwork for a safer, more efficient interchange that supports both current travel needs and future development in the Gardner area. By combining technical analysis with community input, the project team is shaping solutions that will improve regional connectivity for years to come.
