B-21 Facility Renovation
Project Overview
The B-21 Facility Renovation project at Ellsworth Air Force Base (AFB) in South Dakota is not just a renovation but a strategic endeavor to bolster the B-21 Weapons Release Systems Shop. This project, spanning approximately 50,000 square feet, involves comprehensive renovations to enhance the infrastructure, electrical, mechanical, low-voltage and fire protection systems. It also includes interior upgrades and exterior modifications to ensure compliance with accessibility standards. GBA Builder’s Federal team has been instrumental in providing construction management services for this comprehensive renovation of the facility.
Unique Aspects
The project is associated with the B-21 Raider bomber program, designated as the successor to the B-1B bomber. Ellsworth AFB was chosen as the base for B-21 operations and training, adding strategic importance to this renovation endeavor. The project contributes to the modernization of the facilities and also aligns with broader national defense objectives.
Challenges & Solutions
One of the most intriguing aspects of this project is the complexity it presents. Meeting stringent security requirements outlined in AFI 16-1404 has necessitated meticulous planning for site access, phasing and handling of Controlled Unclassified Information. To address these challenges, a comprehensive Site Security and Access Management Plan was developed, outlining construction perimeters, badging protocols and protocols for managing sensitive information. The project’s location within a Munitions Security Area further mandates adherence to specific protocols, including the use of Free Zones and continuous security escorts outside designated areas.
